What inspired this career path for you?
I’ve always had a penchant for changing and creating new environments that reflect the personality of the architecture or mood of the space. When I decided to change my career path from a focus on graphic art and advertising (followed by a short stint in the restaurant business) to interior design, it was a natural progression for me. I love creating an ambiance through colors, textures, and furniture layouts that are intentional and give real purpose to a space.
What is your go-to source for inspiration?
Travel has always been a source of inspiration for me and my work. I cannot begin to tell you how many times I’ve referenced photos—either ones I have taken on the road or ones that I’ve found—while scheming for a project. Fabrics I’ve collected and trinkets I’ve brought back from trips are often the foundation on which I create my designs.
Tell us about your creative process.
The first step for me is always to make a connection with the client. I want to know who they are and what resonates with them. What colors are they drawn to? What is the spirit of their personality? What do they want to feel in the space that I am creating for them: happy, energized, relaxed, content? I like to imagine that I can channel that energy into a design that reflects who they are and how they’ll live in the space. I tailor my designs to each individual client, first and foremost. I lean on my own sense of balance and design sensibility to bring everything together in one complete, cohesive whole.
Describe your style in 6 words or less.
How about four? Classic, livable, timeless, and elegant.
What’s a staple in your tool kit?
Felt pads for furniture legs! (Akin to always having a hair-tie handy, just in case.)
Who do you look up to in the design world?
I am in awe of so many veterans in the design community. Above and beyond talent, it takes fortitude and resilience balanced with kindness, patience, and good humor to survive in this business. And I can assure you that any super successful designers must possess all of those qualities to thrive. I’m in awe of Alexa Hampton’s genuine personality and approachable manner. So many designers are struggling to find the right path for success, and I feel she’s always willing to share her advice to those who could use it. Miles Redd is another designer who stands out to me. His work is perfection. There’s that Hollywood magic that shines through, and this is a look I try to cultivate when the space and, most importantly, client allows.
If you could design a space for anyone, what kind of space and for whom would it be?
I would love to design a spa retreat/hotel for individuals recovering from illnesses. I would put to use everything I have learned from my studies in feng shui and the healing properties of color, balance, music, art, crystals, literature, and high-quality furnishings. All of these things living together in harmony have a tremendously positive effect on the mind, body, and soul.
Tell us your favorite design-related word, phrase, or quote.
Hands down my favorite quote is this, coined by Elsie de Wolfe: “I am going to make everything around me beautiful. That will be my life.”
Which design blog, website, TV show, or magazine would you be lost without?
This is a tough one because I go to every design outlet for something different! I do tend to gravitate toward printed publications, as I love being able to tear out anything I find to be inspiring and save it for later. The magic of print!
What do you love about Viyet?
To me, Viyet is, essentially, a beautifully curated online antiques fair. It’s a place where I can go and know that I’ll find so many interesting and unique treasures—without even having to leave my office!
