Designer Profile: Harry Heissmann

Harry Heissmannreceived his Masters of Interior Design degree from the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, Germany in 1995. Shortly after he followed his dream of moving to New York. Harry’s designs combine comfort, practicality, wit and humor, all elegantly organized to support his primary goal of satisfying the client’s needs and wishes.

What inspired this career path for you? Certainly my grandmother. I grew up with her and she was very artistic. She also lived in a house full of Scandinavian furniture and design pieces, 17th century illustrated books, etc.

What is your go-to source for inspiration? New York City. Just go to any neighborhood and walk around. This is why I came here, this is why I’m still here. I can find inspiration almost anywhere, even in a gasoline puddle at the gas station.

Tell us about your creative process. Once I get going it just happens and it is hard to explain. I do start with a floor plan and do tend to see rooms finished in my head.

Describe your style in 6 words or less. Client-centric

What are the biggest trends you see in interior design right now and what are you loving (and not loving)? I see lots of trends, but don’t aspire to be ‘trendy’ or ‘of-the-moment.’ Interiors should evolve with the people living in them and should be relevant for years to come.

What’s a staple in your toolkit? Humor

Who do you look up to in the design world? I’m looking up to design heaven, particularly Mr. Hadley. I’ve never looked up to anyone more than him in the nine years we spent working together.

If you could design a space for anyone, what kind of space and for who would it be? It would be a beach house for my best friends with a guest room for myself.

Tell us your favorite design related word, phrase, or quote. ‘Style is a simple way of saying complicated things’ (Jean Cocteau)

Which design blog, website, TV show, or magazine would you be lost without? Ebay, World of Interiors, Vogue Living Australia, German AD
