Designer Profile: Michelle Nussbaumer

Nussbaumer’s showroom Ceylon et Cie, marries Michelle’s love for theatrical and exotic pieces with an eclectic mix of goods that “have traveled back and forth across the ocean.” With a degree in theater set design, Nussbaumer uprooted herself from Dallas and moved to Rome with her Swiss film-producer husband shortly after their marriage 25 years ago. Italy set the new mom afire with inspiration, driving the start of her successful career in interior design.

What inspired this career path for you?  My career path was inspired by my love of beauty and my passion for set design while I was at university.

What is your go-to source for inspiration? Mother Nature. Nobody does it better.

Tell us about your creative process.  I start with a vision board, created especially for each client, that depicts their personality and vibe.

Describe your style in 6 words or less. More is more. Less is never more. Sorry, one word extra. I told you more is more.

What’s a staple in your tool kit?  Red lipstick.

Who do you look up to in the design world? Anyone who has lasted as long as I have, 25+ years.

If you could design a space for anyone, what kind of space and for whom would it be?  A palazzo in Venice or a palace in India for any of my clients, all of whom I adore.
