Designer Profile: Sam Allen

Sam Allen is the is the owner of Sam Allen Interiors, located in Fairfield County, Connecticut. Named by House Beautiful as its Next Wave Designer Sam was just 19 when his career took off. His style is clean, comfortable, and encompasses themes from organic elegance to Parisian Hollywood glamour.

What inspired this career path for you? Growing up the son of a designer and editor, I discovered my passion for design at an early age. A typical day in my house would consist of me getting off the bus and walking into my house where photo shoots were going on and rooms were constantly being redesigned.

What is your go-to source for inspiration? Travel, travel, and more travel!!  I’ve recently been really inspired by all the colors, patterns, and textiles of Marrakesh.

Tell us about your creative process. I start out meeting with the client, assessing the space, listening to the client, and the room. Fabric could be a starting point. There’s lots of inspiration from a fabric sample. It can be the pattern, the color, the texture of the fabric, or it could have all of those three components in it. It really leads to the wall color and the furniture.

Describe your style in 6 words or less. Clean, comfortable, and encompasses themes all the way from organic elegance to Parisian Hollywood glamour.

What are the biggest trends you see in interior design right now and what are you loving (and not loving)? I am not one to follow trends. I stick to classic items that never tire or go out of style, and the needs of the homeowner.

What’s a staple in your tool kit? My tape measure. Nothing is worse than ordering an eight-foot-long custom sofa from Belgium and not having it fit through the front door.

Who do you look up to in the design world? Martha Stewart. She started her business empire right in her very own kitchen. She turned it into a billion dollar brand over the course of her career. She has an amazing work ethic and drive. She’s gone through some difficult times and learned from her experiences, but has never lost her optimism.

If you could design a space for anyone, what kind of space and for whom would it be?A dressing room for Caitlyn Jenner as she is starting a brand new chapter and identity in her life, so it would be fun to create a space that reflects the woman she is.

Tell us your favorite design-related word, phrase, or quote. Success has less to do with talent and everything to do with courage.

Which design blog, website, TV show, or magazine would you be lost without? The Peak of Chic, Viyet (of course), Downton Abbey, and House Beautiful.

What do you love about Viyet? The fact that they carry some of the top brands in the home furnishings industry, such as Donghia and Holly Hunt. Viyet also vets their items to provide only the best to their customers – they give you the Benjamin Moore paint color that is on whatever item you purchase, so it gives you the tools to help guide you on finishing your space.
