Designer Profile: Trip Haenisch

Possessing an extraordinary eye for detail and unwavering commitment to style, Trip Haenisch is an award-winning interior designer. Renowned for combining refined creativity with the unexpected, Trip’s signature design aesthetic consists of sophisticated, collected spaces with a laid-back twist that embodies quintessential California living.

What inspired this career path for you? I owned a to-the-trade only furniture and accessory showroom where all the top designers shopped. I learned so much from them. That’s where I first became a student of design.

What is your go-to source for inspiration? Books, magazines, the Internet, and art.

Tell us about your creative process. We look at the architecture and have discussions with the client about what they are looking for. From there, we create mood boards to get on the same page, and then get into specifics about function and the look of each space.

Describe your style in 6 words or less. Collected and comfortable.

What are the biggest trends you see in interior design right now and what are you loving (and not loving)? Outdoor fabric on indoor furniture is a trend I am loving right now. The selection of outdoor fabric this year is amazing. It’s fun and functional—great for kid-proofing any room. I also see the outdoor living room as a trend.  It goes hand in hand with the California lifestyle, so it’s easy to love this trend as well.

What’s in your toolkit? Comfortable, soft furnishings combined with fantastic art.

Who do you look up to in the design world? Jacques Grange, Muriel Brandolini, Christophe Leoni, Jean-Philippe Nuel, Piero Lissoni, Pierre-Yves Rochon, Renzo Mongiardino, Philippe and Patricia Jousse, Hervé Van Der Straeten.

If you could design a space for anyone, what kind of space and for whom would it be? Anyone with a great modern art collection housed in organic modern architecture.

Tell us your favorite design-related word, phrase, or quote. “Not caring what other people think is the secret to being a great collector.” It’s a quote by Richard Shapiro.

Which design magazine would you be lost without? Elle Decor.

Why do you love Viyet? It’s such a great idea. The selection is amazing. There are so many terrific finds.
